    Discreetly hiding the truth

    Discreetly hiding the truth

Appearance and age don't go together. Saying your age has a hidden meaning. And when asked why you're hiding it, they shrug, as if it's something to be expected. Among the questions we tease little kids with is what their name is and, even more so, how old they are. Little ones know the answers perfectly well. They'll say their name proudly, as if they were at least the masters of this planet. As for age - well, there's a small problem here. They'll gladly show you with their fingers how old they are, but they'll gladly add another finger. As if this year gives them maturity, independence, strength, proves that the kids are great - almost that they have the right to get an ID card. And later the years go by one after the other... As the kids grow up, their attitude towards age also changes. First-graders will always and very precisely - to the day, they'll say how old they are.

This accuracy is taught to them in school. As they grow up, almost imperceptibly from a certain period of their lives onwards, they will start to add at least six months to their age, and often twelve. Girls know how to make themselves look older – hidden under layers of makeup and high heels. Boys are not far behind in this regard either. A three-day beard, disheveled hair, a cool look – and here is the boy, older than he really is. Shortly after 25, we slowly begin to change our attitude towards age. In fact, this attitude is almost always related to how someone feels, how they perceive their body and how happy they are with it, with self-esteem, with their attitude towards peers, with expectations, hopes, fears.

Saying age has a hidden meaning. Few people will say exactly how old they are. Men are wiser. They add a few years to their age and are very happy when someone tells them: "You look very good and I don't give you that much". What can we say about a woman who looks good, maintains herself, is great for her age, has an enviable status? Well, then we say: "She must have fallen in love!".

You can't please others, so don't even try. For example, if a 38-year-old woman puts on a short, colorful dress, colorful socks, bright shoes and a scarf, most will say: "Look, at her age she dresses like a girl!". Or a 60-year-old man is wearing jeans and a leather jacket, he will immediately be described as an "old...". Remember the proverb: "Don't please the one you can't please".

This summer I was fascinated by a lady of 80, with black hair without white roots, a haircut, a wide, long black beach dress, under which a whole swimsuit, also black, was visible. She was carrying a white beach bag on her shoulder, on which in black letters she wrote: "I'm old and I'm proud of it!". It's natural that no one gets younger with time, let's not hide our age! We are as old as we feel.
