In total, more than 48 thousand houses were built in San Francisco between 1849 and 1915, most of them were multi-colored to emphasize the filigree architectural details. Bright colors were in fashion: red, yellow, chocolate, peach ...

During the war, many houses were repainted gray, about 16,000 buildings were demolished, and those that survived were eventually faced with brick or covered with siding. Some were damaged by fires that followed the 1906 earthquake.
The location is Alamo Square, and the Victorian-style houses are called the Painted Ladies. There are only 7 of them now, and they are so named because they are painted in three or more colors.
People simply call them "the sisters." They were built between 1892 and 1896. Inside these buildings, gas lamps are still used for lighting. They are located in Nob Hill and are not cheap. The value of each of the houses is about 4 million dollars.
Interest in these houses arose in 1963. The artist Butch Kardum, inspired by the past splendor of his old house, repainted it in blue and green. Some criticized this bold decision, while others also began to revive their homes. Soon, Butch Kardum began to advise anyone who wanted to bring bright colors to the gray streets of San Francisco.
More supporters joined the artist's idea. Their efforts led to the transformation of dozens of gray houses. And as if by magic, entire streets and neighborhoods blossomed. It is nice to note that this process does not stop to this day.
