In the world of cinema and theater, there is an unwritten
law - the truly great actors are precisely those who are the most natural,
down-to-earth and unforced. Among these people is Nevena Kokanova - the first
lady of Bulgarian cinema. Adding the fact that Austrian aristocratic blood
flows in her veins, hardly anyone doubts the veracity of these statements.
Nevena Kokanova and Rade Markovich. Everything between them
starts a bit banal for an on-screen couple, who came together to play the role
of two lovers in a film. They meet on the set of "The Peach Thief",
and the chemistry between them ignites at the moment.
This scorching love arrives with a bang in Nevena's life.
Their love is impossible because he is married to the Serbian star Olivera
Markovich, an artist of Yugoslavia, and she is married to the film director
Ljubomir Šarlandžiev. He is tolerant, but he makes it clear that she must
choose.
For seven years, Markovich and Kokanova hide this impossible
love. It is a love of stolen moments, kisses, secret meetings and doom. A
beautiful love because of which time stops, the air freezes and the earth stops
spinning, just to give more space and minutes to the lovers to love each other.
Markovich says: "I was waiting for my Nevena", but
he never waited for her. Kokanova does not leave her husband. For 40 years,
they wrote incredible love confessions and although the domestic and Yugoslav
secret services vigilantly monitored their correspondence, they kept the flame
of love alive until the end of their lives.
Nevena passed away on June 3, 2000, at the age of 61. The insidious disease cancer took the life of the great actress. Ten years later, her great love, Rade Markovich, also passed away. After his death, it became clear that he had kept all of her letters. Rade had kept her incredible confessions, joint photos from film festivals around the world, as well as photos of the beautiful Bulgarian actress. His son Goran is adamant that he will keep the correspondence. Although the letters are not from his mother, he does not think that he should destroy them.
