Friends, family, and a cozy home certainly make us happy. But the general environment we live in also has a big impact on us. When it comes to quality of life, there are so-called “happy cities,” where the quality of life is more than just good. But what exactly makes a city “happy”?
To find out, researchers at the Institute recently published their own index, tracking 82 happiness indicators across six main categories, including citizens, governance, environment, economy, health, and mobility. The index measures policies that contribute to quality of life, as well as their implementation and impact on residents.
So, here are the top five.
➤ Copenhagen, Denmark
Denmark often ranks in the index of the happiest countries, so it’s perhaps no surprise that its capital city received the highest overall score. Copenhagen tops the list thanks to its excellent results in the “Environment” and “Economy” categories. The city impresses with its extensive green spaces, efficient waste management and sustainable practices. The cultural life is vibrant. The city is also known for its cycling infrastructure, with around a third of the population using a bicycle as their primary means of transport.
