Bachkovo Monastery - the "Virgin Mary" - Monasteries

  The second largest Bulgarian monastery, the Bachkovo cloister, lies in the valley of the Chepelare river (also known by the locals as Chaya), about 10km to the south of the town of Assenovgrad. On all sides, the monastery is surrounded by the hills of the Rhodopi mountain, which together with its size and ancient spirit make is one of the most visited monasteries in Bulgaria. The complex and its neighbourhood have grown into a developed tourist sight where dozens of small shops, stalls, and restaurants stand on both sides of the walkway to the gates and appeal with their variety to visitors. The monastery “St George The Victorious” is situated just outside the village of Belashtitsa, which in turn lies 12km to the south of the city of Plovdiv – there where the Rhodopi mountains start to rise from the ends of the Thracian valley. The monastery is not big but is very cozy, nesting within the marvelous forest above the village.     The monastery “St George The Victorious” was built by a Byzantine military commander, Nikifor Skifi, who in 1014 during a battle at the Belasitsa mountain (in present-day Macedonia) appeared with his men in the rear of the courageous Bulgarian Tsar Samuil and this way contributed to the victory of the Byzantine ruler Basilius II who left the field with plenty of spoils and prisoners of war.  In...

Boyana Church - Temples

     Boyana Church is located at the foot of Vitosha Mountain and is extremely valuableand interesting in the historical, artistic and architectural antiques. The church has along history. Its oldest part dates and small from the beginning of XI century in 1259,as reported previously preserved inscription, was built two-storey building - the loweris for cemetery space of boyar donor (donor) of the church, and the upper wasdesignated as a palace chapel. The frescoes in the Boyana Church

The first layer covering the eastern part of the temple dates from the XI - XII th century.Fragments of it can be seen in the lower parts of the apse and the north wall, the upper parts of the west wall and south vault. The second layer of paintings dating from 1259, when the first layer on a team of painters making paintings as a new layer appears both floors of the second part of the church. The church has a worldwide reputation mainly with frescoes from 1259 Over 240 - these images are characterized by individuality, compelling psychological characteristics and vitality. In the first part of the temple dome is the image of Christ Pantocrator. In pandantivite - Evangelists Matthew, Mark, Luke and John. On the foreheads of four arches are painted the image of Christ...
